Using Pagers for Message Notification
(Embedded Voice Mail)

Pager Types

Message Notification works with three types of pagers: a beeper (or tone-only), a messaging type, and a digital type. The following table describes, in general, how the system works with each pager type. The process can change depending on the pager number parameters you enter for individual mailboxes.

Pager Type

How the system works

Tone-only

Dials the phone number of the pager.

Message

Dials the phone number of the pager and announces: "(Name) ... You have new messages. Please access your mailbox through the pager speaker."

Digital

Dials the phone number of the pager and displays:

(remainder of pager number) 555*1212* (mailbox number)

Change '555-1212' to your company's telephone number using Express Manager.

Pager Number Parameters

Pager numbers can vary in length, but some pagers require pauses or other actions to occur within the pager number. The [*] key plus a digit define these specific actions as shown in the following chart.

Helpful Tips for Setting Up Pager Notification

Using Digital Pagers over IP Trunks

When the Embedded Voice Mail system on one controller attempts to sent a Message Notification over IP trunks to a digital pager on another controller, the system is unable to outpulse any digits that follow the pause in the pager's number.

To ensure proper functioning of the Message Notification process, use the System Speed Call number as the Message Notification Number. Complete the following steps:

  1. On either controller, configure the speed call number and the associated actual pager's number.

  2. Insert a P in the Actual Number field where you want a pause to occur. See Speed Call - Pause.

  1. VM Mailboxes ( ) or User and Services Configuration form ( )
